The creators of IMPACTability®: The Nonprofit Leaders Podcast would like to spotlight one of their most successful episodes to date: “Let’s Get Some Publicity” with guest, Kimberly Lohman-Clapp. She has been a television and radio news anchor, winner of five Emmys, two Edward R. Murrow Awards for journalistic excellence, and several AP Broadcaster Awards. Many nonprofits puzzle over how to get their news to the public. You’ve got a nonprofit organization with a fantastic mission, and you’re doing all the right things, but how do you get the word out? In this episode, we start with the basics: how to get in touch with the media?

Excerpt from Kimberly Lohman-Clapp, when asked the question, “Give us your top five or so tips for getting free publicity.”

“Number one, find your characters: people your organization has helped who are willing to talk about the impact. Number two, I’d say pay attention to the news cycle and hit when the topic is hot, and connect your story to that big story. Don’t wait to invite the media after something has happened; invite them to cover something when it’s going to happen. Number three, I’d say don’t be afraid to collaborate with other organizations to launch a big campaign. They may have resources you don’t, and they may get more of the spotlight. They may get more of the money, but if you get some, you’ve still accomplished your mission. Number four, be super responsive to the media. Give them your cell phone number and answer texts right away. Reporters are on such tight deadlines. If they cannot reach you in the moment, they will probably move on to the next. My fifth tip would be if you can’t get traditional media like radio, newspaper, TV, or even on a podcast or the bloggers, always know you can be your own production house through your social media platforms.”

Kimberly Lohman-Clapp is the founder and CEO of Golden Hour Communications and has an extensive background in public relations.
